As a travel blogger, I adored the character of Northern Arts Hotel in Castlemaine! The charming old building and warm, cozy room were highlights. While the breakfast was quite basic and the shared bathroom a bit inconvenient, the friendly staff and lovely atmosphere made it a memorable stay. I'll be back!

What a truly memorable stay, nothing too much trouble. Impeccably clean place in eclectic style with all necessary facilities. The great location for the price, close to The Taproom, and Castlemaine. Also, to artwork throughout the building.

everywhere was impeccably clean, room with blinds, a storage space, and a lounge area was really exceptionally clean and airy. location: the hotel was close enough to all the attractions and the `` re-purposing '' of the old woollen mill. café coffee basics located 1 mi away was a nice surprise.

I recently spent some time at the Northern Arts Hotel in Castlemaine, and there were definitely some highlights along with a few quirks. First off, the charm of this place is hard to beat. It really is an arts hotel, and I loved how the walls were adorned with genuine artwork instead of just the standard hotel prints. One evening, I stumbled upon a local mandolin group practicing in the common area, and they kindly invited me to join in. That kind of community vibe is gold! The room we had was decent-sized and comfy, but I wasn’t expecting to find the bathroom across the hall. It was clean, but a bit of a trek if you needed to pop in during the night – I mean, who doesn’t want the convenience of a bathroom right there? Now, about the heating – there wasn’t any air conditioning; however, a fan was provided. It was fine at night since it cools down, but I'm not sure how everyone would feel in the peak of summer. Breakfast was pretty solid, offering various goodies, including some gluten-free options, which I really appreciated. There’s even a great little patisserie next door that had the best espresso—definitely a win for coffee lovers! The hotel does have some older quirks. For instance, there are two flights of stairs, which might be a challenge for anyone with knee issues or heavy luggage. My suitcase and I had a little workout! And speaking of quirks, I felt like I was temporarily transported back in time with the decor—it was charming but a bit gloomy for my taste. During my stay, things did get a little noisy with a live music gig happening downstairs. It was cool until it went on later than I expected, especially since they had this old squeaky flooring making noises whenever someone walked past. And just a heads up, the room I was in was quite compact—more tiny than I thought, and I could have used a few extra towels in the bathroom. There was a pretty good selection of tea and coffee making facilities in the hallway, which I enjoyed. Nothing beats a midnight cup of tea! But I did wish for a little more variety in breakfast options; it was a bit straightforward with toast and cereal. Now, the housekeeping could've used a bit of a better approach. One morning, I came back to find the room scolded for being a bit messy. I had a couple of clothes out and an empty disposable wipe that I hadn’t tossed yet, and let’s just say, I was surprised at the stern tone. It was more amusing than anything in retrospect, but still, a gentle nudge would’ve sufficed instead of feeling like I was back in school! So, while there were some cozy features and delightful local interactions, I reckon both the decor and the shared bathroom situation could use some rethinking—especially for first-timers expecting more privacy. If you're okay with character and quirks, this place might just tickle your fancy!

The room was quite cozy with a comfy queen bed and a private bathroom. I loved the air-conditioning, and the little extras like tea and coffee made it feel like home. the overall vibe was super chill, and the cleanliness really stood out. It felt good to unwind there!
Maybe a few more art pieces would have been nice—just a personal touch for a more cozy feel.
